Compare/Contrast Essay
To write a compare/contrast essay, you need to make NEW connections and/or express NEW differences between two things. The key word here is NEW!
Why NEW? If you want to write a successful compare/contrast essay, you must avoid writing about really obvious differences and similarities. For example:
- We all know that horses are larger than cats.
- We also know that basketball teams contain less players than football teams.
Tell us something we don't know (or might not notice)!
It would be better to write about how sensitive both horses and cats are to human needs and emotions. You could also suggest that though both basketball and football require a lot of teamwork, basketball players are expected to be a lot more versatile than football players.
You don't have to be a genius to write an interesting compare/contrast essay--you just have to look at ordinary things in a new way!
Now, follow this step:
- Choose 2 things that could go in the same category, but are also quite different.Good choices might be:
- Basketball & Football (both sports)
- Horses & Cats (both animals, but different in many ways)
- Writing & Singing (both art forms, but different in many ways)
- Gather your ideas by writing down characteristics of each thing. Note the differences and similarities between them.
- Ask yourself these important questions before you begin writing your draft:
- Make sure you understand the instruction: are you about to compare and contrast, or only compare, or only contrast?
- Make sure you write the NEW difference or contrast that reader need to know.

Organizing Your Compare and Contrast Essay
There are two primary ways to organize your compare and contrast paper.
1. Chunking: placing all of the information for each individual subject in one place (chunk), and then using similarities as transitions.
Here’s a sample outline:
- Introductory paragraph: thesis statement (Eventhough they can work and go well together, but these two girls are distinct and yet similar in some ways.)
- Jane is distinct because…
- Jane is similar to Alice in these ways
- Alice is distinct because…
- Concluding paragraph
Piecing: giving pieces of the information for each individual subject in each paragraph—arranging the information by topic rather than by subject.
Here’s a sample outline:
- Introductory paragraph: thesis statement (Eventhough they can work and go well together, but these two girls are distinct and yet similar in some ways.)
- Differences and Similarities in Jane and Alice’s appearances
- Differences and Similarities in Jane and Alice’s backgrounds
- Differences and Similarities in Jane and Alice’s interests
- Concluding paragraph

Shades of Being Human
by Ella Berven
Alice Walker and Maya Angelou are two contemporary African-American writers. Although almost a generation apart in age, both women display a remarkable similarity in their lives. Each has written about her experiences growing up in the rural South, Ms. Walker through her essays and Ms. Angelou in her autobiographies. Though they share similar backgrounds, each has a unique style which gives to us, the readers, the gift of their exquisite humanity, with all of its frailties and strengths, joys and sorrows.
Tragedy struck both of these women at the age of eight. Ms. Walker lost her sight in one eye. Ms. Angelou was raped. Each described the incident as part of a larger work. Ms. Walker related her experience in the body of an essay published in her book, In Search of Our Mothers' Gardens. Ms. Angelou told her story as a chapter in her autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Although both wrote about their traumatic experience, the way each depicted the incident was distinct and seemed to be told for very different purposes.
Alice Walker reports the facts to the reader with short sentences written in the present tense. She chooses words which elicit a forceful emotional response from her audience. For example, in telling how her brothers were given BB guns and she was not, Ms. Walker writes, "Because I am a girl, I do not get a gun. Instantly, I am relegated to the position of Indian." The word "relegated" causes the reader to be irate and indignant. Most people do not like being "relegated" to anything. Another illustration of Ms. Walker's use of dynamic words can be found in her description of the encounter with her parents following the accident. She speaks of being "confronted" by her parents. "Confronted" is a combative word. When people are confronted by others, they want to launch an attack. Her style and choice of words make the reader aware that she is alone and fearful. She is left to fight her battles by herself.
Maya Angelou narrates her account in a conversational tone. She uses the past tense which tells her audience "it's over" for her. Her words are free from severity. They encourage the reader to see hope in the midst of sadness. Instead of trying to elicit a particular emotional response, Angelou invites her audience to share in her thoughts and feelings. For instance, having given an account of the rape, she writes, "I thought I had died--I woke up in a white-walled world, and it had to be heaven." The reader feels a connection with her pain, yet realizes redemption lies close at hand. Whereas Walker tells how she was confronted by her parents, Angelou explains,"she [mother] picked me up in her arms and the terror abated for a while." There is no impression of combativeness. There is only tenderness and care. Once again, she invites the reader in. Walker wants the reader to feel for her; Angelou wants her audience to feel with her. They achieve their objectives by directing the reader's attention to specific emotions.
The emotional focus of Alice Walker's story is rage, red-hot and isolating. As I read this piece, I became livid, not only at the thought of her devastating injury and her family's apparent disassociation, but also at Ms. Walker herself. It appeared to me that she never let go of it. Instead, she seemed to embrace her anger.
On the other hand, Ms. Angelou's anger is subtle and short-lived. Though I was incensed by what happened to her, she quietly insisted that I leave it behind. She concentrated less on her anger and more on the warmth and support of her family.
It would be impossible not to address the ways in which both women refer to the intense physical pain each of them suffered as little girls. Ms. Walker gives little description of her anguish, but I clearly felt it. When I read, ". . . I feel an incredible blow in my right eye . . ." and, "my eye stings, and I cover it with my hand," my immediate response was to quickly cover my eye with my hand. My body reacted to her pain.
Ms. Angelou's description produced another effect. She wrote, "Then there was the pain. A breaking and entering when even the senses are torn apart." Instead of a physical reaction, I felt a wrenching of the heart. Ms. Walker focused my attention on the injury to her body, while Ms. Angelou focused on her emotional scars.
My most powerful emotional response throughout both stories was one of incredible sorrow. I felt the tremendous weight that sadness and despair can fold around a heart, not only for a child's trauma, but also for the devastating repercussions that tragedy can produce--loss of dignity, self-esteem, and childhood itself. I wanted to comfort them both. However, by the end of Ms. Walker's account of the incident, I not only wanted to comfort her, I wanted to shield her as well. Her wounds were still open. At the end of her narrative, she wrote, "Now when I stare at people--a favorite pastime up to now--they will stare back. Not at the 'cute' little girl, but at her scar. For six years, I do not stare at anyone, because I do not raise my head." I wanted to intervene and help her.
Although in Ms. Angelou's story I yearned to comfort the child, it was obvious that the adult Maya Angelou did not need my protection.
Alice Walker and Maya Angelou are both extremely courageous writers. From each we receive a rare and poignant gift. As her book suggests, Alice Walker challenges us to search for resolution in the face of loneliness and despair. Maya Angelou, who "knows why the caged bird sings," reminds us that loneliness and despair never have the last word. She gently points us to a window of hope. Both women bless us with shades of being human.

Comic is a medium used to express ideas by images, often combine with text or other visual information. Unlike comic, novel is a long narrative, normally in prose, which describes fictional characters and events, usually in the form of a sequential story. Although reading comic and novel are kind of reading for pleasure, there are quite few differences and similarities.
B. Body
1. These are the diversity of reading comic and novel.
a. One difference is completeness of story. Reading a standard comic usually includes the beginning, middle or end of a story, so a person typically cannot read or buy just one to learn the whole plot or discover the characters. By contrast, a novel tends to cover one story in its entirety.
b. A second difference is length and format. In general, a comic runs about 21 to 24 pages. Most take only 10 to 30 minutes to read, making us great for filling short periods of free time. Unlike comic, novel can be three to six times as long, with anywhere from 60 to 120 pages, but a person usually still can finish one in a single sitting.
c. The other difference is a place where we can find. Most comics are often sold directly through specialty stores, with only a few getting larger distribution to booksellers and libraries.On the other hand,novels usually are available at traditional book stores and libraries, although some comic book stores do carry some titles.
2. These are the similarities of reading comic and novel.
a. One similarity is fiction. Either comic or novel is kind of fictional story. Both of them describe fictional characters and events. Furthermore, the readers can probably identify the characters and characterization of the story.
b. A second similarity is moral value. The readers will definitely get what the moral value is in the story by reading a comic and novel. Moreover, after reading both of them, the readers can feel how good or bad of the story is.

Indeed, by reading we can be able to discover new ideas, concepts, places, and people. Reading Novel and Watching the Filmed Novel
Reading novel and watching the filmed novel are favorite for many people, especially teenagers. There are different and similiarities of reading novel and watching the filmed novel.
Watching the filmed make us more understand about story in the novel without we should imagine what the actor and actris do in the story. Both read novel and watching the film are same need consentration to following the plot.for example, we lost one capture in the novel we can’t know about the story so are when we watching the film. If we lost one episode we can’t know what actors/actress do before so that in the next episode he/she is dead. So, we should more give attention and consentration when read the novel or watching the filmed novel.
Reading novel can make the reader more remember about the outhor, actor/actris name, and play directorr longer than watching the filmed novel because watcher just remember it after watch the filmed and will forget it. Sometimes when we watching film we just focus on the story and the hansome actor until we are forget little thing like who is the outhors, who is the original name of the actors/actress and who is the play director. That is beacuse after the film the end we immediately turn off our television or laptop and if we watch the film in the cinema we immediately go out without wait the screen blank. Different with reading novel in the last book (in the cover) we will read what the authors write on the cover. So, we can know and more remember than watching film.

It just shows us about a few of illustration of the author wants to make on it, and the author of novel wants to make the readers imagine characteristic or situation by the readers itself. On the other hand, comic has clear illustration that makes the readers follow the imagination that have illustrated by the author. Whereas, both comic and novel similarity are need the readers’s effort to grasp and imagine it. It is not as easy as we know, because you need a lot of your creativity to understand about what the author means. The readers will have different opinion with the author. So, the readers will need effort to understand it.
The second difference is how deeper sense of literature between comic and novel. Sense of literature is determining , what kind of novel and comic that we read. Even if novel and comic are kind of literature, but we can feel higher sense of literature on novel than comic. Comics is an art that use many pictures with a static image which has been assembled and will be a story. The novel is an essay that has grooves the length and content of the story is based on the story of a person's life and always put the properties and behavior in the story. Comics and novels have some different and similar characteristic. There are some kinds of different and similar in the novel.
The first, the differences between comics and novels is if the novel has a story that is more detail, because usually novel give more priority the character in the novel and novels also always at the beginning of the story to explain the names in the novel. Whereas comics, comic usually use language that is informal because the comics are usually always use the language of everyday our life so the reader will be more easily to understand.
Second, the other differences comics and novels is if comics have a lot of contents in a story that readers are not easily bored and always wanted to follow the contents in the story because it usually has a lot of comic serial, but if novel usually has only one serial and the pages of novel is very much usually until thousands of pages so that makes the reader will be more easily to bored.
The last is the equation between novels and comics. The similar are all the readers of comic and novels always want to know the plot of the story because it usually the contents in the story have many conflicts that make the contents of the story more interesting and want to make the reader more curious and continue want to read the story.

The second difference is the plot between them. Novel has plot more complicated than comic. It can be proved from the pages, so that’s what makes novel is thicker than comic. Novel more concerned its narrative from the descriptive of characters to the end of conflict, but comic uses images for explaining the plot of story. Although their plot is different, the readers will stay to read them. The readers will be curious when they are reading.
The last difference is about the episode. Every comic has episode on its story, but mostly novel don’t. In comic, it is very easy to appear new climax than novel, for example, comic which is called “Naruto” which has action genre. In that comic, the author can bring out the new enemy easily for adding the episode. But different with novel plot, every episode of comic has simple plot. Both of them can be filmed. We can find many movies or film which is taken from them, such as “Harry Potter”, “One Piece”, and etc.
To summarize, comic and novel have some differences and similarity, although both of them are reading book. They are imagination literature that can make the readers involved in their own. Although they are imagination or fiction, we can learn the moral of theirs and enhance our knowledge about literature.

Many people who love to read do not really like to read comics or the the opposite. My friends even so, there were more like reading a novel than a comic. But many are likes really read both ways, including to me. According to me, reading a novel or comic as much fun. There are some differences in reading novel and comic.
A good novel that I think is a novel that could describe the background story well, bringing readers such as experincing their own, events and explore the feelings experienced by the hero, able to draining the reader's emotions, and makes the reader always felt curious about the next page. Selection of an unusual theme might make a novel interesting, because a lot of interesting things told in the novel. The most important is the advice given by the author through the novel.

Now days, both novel and comic are adopted into a movie. Novel The Great Gatsby and Alice in Wonderland for example, and many superheroes from Marvel Comic are adopted into a movie. Moreover, when novel is adopted into a movie they use actress and actor to resemble the character in the novel. In contrast, when comic is adopted into a movie they may use actress and actor or use animation to resemble the character. They match the animation in a movie just like in a real comic. Therefore, the animation in a movie would not be so different from the image in a real comic.
Generally, Comic and Novel are printed into a book and have several pages. Furthermore, if it has a long story, usually in novel, they will be pressed into several books. It would have duology, trilogy, or tetralogy that is associate of each other. Comic and novel are means that can stimulate imagination in people's mind. Imagination is the ability to form new images and sensations in the mind. Some ways to stimulate imagination are reading comic and novel. Although reading comic and novel are based on author's imagination, but both of them still have differences and yet similarities in several ways.
First, The way of comic creators share their ideas by images is different from the way of novel creators do. Comic delivers almost all of its pages by images than its words, however novel has more words than its images. Similarly, comic and novel have similarity in the quality of story. Nowadays there are many films that based on a well-known novel, such as Harry Potter, The Great Gatsby, Twilight and many more. Usually the story of filmed novel is almost the same with the original novel. Not only the story, sometimes there are some scenes that exactly the same with what’ve been wrote in the novel. But, even that reading a novel and watching filmed novel has several similar things, they also has differences in some ways. In this essay I would like to share about the similarity and the differences about novel and filmed novel.
Mostly a filmed novel and the original novel has almost the same story, that’s because the story is originally from the novel. The director of the film have to make a remarkable movie without changing too much plot story from the original story, so it will still seems similar. But somehow, the original story from the novel has a longer and detail story than the filmed novel. Why?, because film work on the visualization, they played the viewers emotion by the actor or actress’s facial expression. Meanwhile novel have to describe as detail as the writer can about the situation settings and all from the story only using words.
The other similarity between reading a novel and watch the filmed novel is both of them can make the viewers and the readers become so emotional. But the way they deliver the emotional are so different. For the example is that novel will has a lot of beautiful and emotional words to built the emotion of the readers. They will describe about the character mimic, feeling, or anything in a very detail way while using several emotional words with a deep meaning so that the reader will get into the flow. In other hand film will deliver the emotion trough the actress ‘s facial expression. If the A character is sad, they don’t need to write ‘A is sad’ in the subtitle, people will automatically know about what the character’s feel trough the actress expression.
The next similarity is both of this activities are meant to be a refreshing time. When people in a holiday and have no place to go, usually they choose to stay at home enjoying movie or read some books based on what they’re interest to. Whether it is novel or a filmed novel, people do the activities because they want to relax and have fun. But the way we enjoy novel and filmed novel is totally different. When we are about to read a novel, we have to looking for comfortable place with no one will disturb us.we need to be alone and concentrate to the book so that we can understand about what the writers try to deliver. It is very different from enjoying a film which is more okay with anything.
In short, reading novel and watch filmed does have many similarities, like the story line, the purpose of reading and watching the filmed, and the moral values that we can get. People will choose which one they prefer to, it is all depend on each person preference.
