P2K Semester 4: Definition Essay

What is a Definition Essay?

A definition essay is writing that explains what a term means. Some terms have definite, concrete meanings, such as glass, book, or tree. Terms such as honesty, honor, or love are abstract and depend more on a person's point of view.

Three Steps to Effective Definition

1. Tell readers what term is being defined.

2. Present clear and basic information.

3. Use facts, examples, or anecdotes that readers will understand.

Choosing a Definition

Choosing a definition is a key step in writing a definition essay. You need to understand the term before you can define it for others. Read the dictionary, but don't just copy the definition. Explain the term briefly in your own words. Also, it's important to limit your term before you start defining it. For example, you could write forever on the term "love." To limit it, you would write about either "romantic love," "platonic love," or "first love."

Thesis Statement of a Definition Essay

The thesis statement usually identifies the term being defined and provides a brief, basic definition.

Ex: Assertiveness is standing up for your rights.

How to Write an Effective Definition

1. Create a definition. There are several ways to define a term. Here are a few options:

~ Define by function. Explain what something does or how something works.

~ Define by structure. Tell how something is organized or put together.

~ Define by analysis. Compare the term to other members of its class and then illustrate the differences. These differences are special characteristics that make the term stand out. For example, compare a Siberian husky to other dogs, such as lap dogs, mutts, or sporting dogs.

Ex: A Siberian husky is a dog reputed for its ability to tolerate cold, its distinctive features, and its keen strength and stamina.

~ Define by what the term does not mean. This distinction can sometimes clarify a definition and help a reader to better understand it.

2. Use understandable facts, examples, or anecdotes. Select facts, examples, or anecdotes to fully explain your definition. Ask yourself, "Which examples will best help readers understand the term? What examples would most appeal to my readers? Will a brief story reveal the term's meaning?" Do not use any examples that will not support the definition.

Remember: A definition essay is writing that explains what a term means. When writing a definition essay, remember to tell readers what term is being defined, to present a clear and basic definition, and to use facts, examples, or anecdotes that readers will understand.

The Differences between Love Watching Movie and Reading Novel

Even though movie and novel are the same in consist, in love reading or watching there are some differences.
One difference is imagination of readier or viewer. Reading a novel is really different with watching movie which from novel. In reading novel our head is given a change to imagine from the explaination in novel. Then in watching movie, the viewer will undergo the dicrase of imagination because they only guessing what will be happens the next, and because the movie director has made all of the picture, plot, dialog, which makes the viewers does not improve their head to imagine more. Whatever watching movie can give the viewers the explanation of so many visualization, this is really different with reading novel which only can guess about the character in novel.
Second difference is the plot. In reading novel the author explain every single things in detail so the reader can imagine what is happening in the story completely about the feeling, place and environment around the character, then in watching movie the movie explains the story by acting of character in simple ways. Reading a novel is not only giving the complete plot but also giving the reader the changes to know every single moment that author writes in the novel. That is really different with watching movie, the movie director makes the movie as simple as they can, so the viewers do not know the plot about the story completely even watching movie is more realistic.
The last difference is about the time. Many people says that watching movie is more interesting than reading a novel. Actually when the readers read a hundred or more pages of novel it has their own art in reading. The reader need a good situation and condition to read a novel, it is does not matter for the reader because reading their own joyful. The readers also need a long time to finish their novel to be read around one until seven day. It is different with watching movie, even though movie is realistic because the movie director has disigned everything according to their imagination, but it does not give an art value when the viewer watch it. Watching movie only needs short time frequent to know how is the end of the movie, the viewers only need one until four hours to finish the movie to be watched. Reading novel completely with movie actually is better, if we have lot of time to do it. In this case people rather like one of them. In the other side, someone who does not have enough time to read a novel absolutely will choose watching and they who do not have much money but they have so much time will choose reading novel than watching.

I. Introductory Paragraph
Thesis Statement: This planet has plenty examples of popular dictators, and in this article; the writer has an opportunity to discuss about the characters of dictator itself and its influence to the world.

For instance: In the movie Lord of the Rings, Frodo and Sam Wise had a wonderful fellowship. They lived in peace and in one accord. Also in the movie, Gandalf sent Frodo on a mission. Gandalf brought Frodo’s friend, Sam Wise, who went with him on the journey. As they traveled together, Sam Wise made a promise to Frodo that no matter what happens he will never leave or forsake him. Although he knew that this journey is dangerous but he sacrificed himself for his friend. This movie showed me the true meaning of friendship.
IV. Conclusion: In short, a true friendship is one condition where two or more people who offer love and support and will never leave or betray one another.

I. Introduction: Reading a novel and watching a film is very crucial to enlarge our insight in
story. Although they are the same mediums for communicating a story but they have difference things. We will have two basic differences of the reading the novel and watching the film.

First, books are more complete and detail in giving information of a story and the reader has chances to increase his imagination. Sometime when we read a novel and then watch the film, we will find less information. Second, books confer spare time to enjoy the content of the story. In the books we find original story. The difference and the resemble of film and novel
The work of art is a form of expression that is based on perception , attitude , outlook , and the response of artists to the cultural phenomenon. He comes down to crystallize in a text , the text in a format can be verbal , musical , performance , as well as visual . It reflects the struggle of inner experience creator, although individual. The creation of a work of art cannot be separated from the socio - cultural interactions experienced by its creator in the form of repertoire. Thus, any work of art is not entirely as the work of a truly individual but also at a social construction residue.
As we know, many entertainment industry products created on the basis of other art works that have been circulating in the market, especially the works that received rave reviews from the public. Many soap operas that were created on the basis of a song, poem or short story . Likewise with the film , many of which were created on the basis of poetry , novels , cartoons , or comics . Essay : Eternal Love

Love is an intense affection for another person based on familial or personal ties. Often this “intense affection” stems from a sexual attraction that other person, we say we love other people, when we are attracted to them and when they make us feel good. Notice that a key phrase definition of love is the phrase "based on." This phrase implies that we love conditionally; in other words, we love someone because they fulfill a condition that we require before we can love them. How many times have you heard or said “ I love you because you are beautiful, cut, etc. “. Love is not only conditional, because eternal love actions a relationship of mutual understanding and respect, someone who willingly sacrifice anything without expecting any reply. he or she loves another one until death, and it continues in their afterlife or heaven.
Love based on feelings and emotions that can change from one moment another, love not only sequence of word “I love you” which is everyone can be easy to say it, but eternal love can be seen on several actions, This expression can be seen daily life, such as: someone never says rude when debate for something, never hurt physically when angry or give punishment, always forgive the fault when someone doing mistake, never tried to nurture, and guide to be better. Mostly extremely high in today's society, the divorce rate is because husbands and wives supposedly stop loving one another-or they "fall out of love". They may going through a rough patch in their marriage, and they no longer "feel" love for their spouse, so they call it quits and over for all. it happen actions doesn’t do it.
Love of Parents to make great sacrifices for the care of their children. When you were a baby in the middle of night always crying, it makes your mother wake up to get her affection and give milk, even they are tired it mid no take her angry, gave attention to their child, accompanied you until you got sleep again. Everyday parents protect their children from danger, attend their cries, and reassure their children after a bad dream. Parents give up many necessities for their children every day. In the poem “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden, the father displays the sacrifices he makes for this son. The father’s “cracked hand that ached”, shows he sacrificed pain and discomfort for this child (576). The father takes no thought for this own confront. Also, self- sacrificing this own warmth so his child could wake up to a warm house. The father would get up in the “blue-black cold”, to make a fire (576). The sacrifices parents make for their children will have an impact on them when they become parents.
In conclusion, Eternal love is someone’s actions with sincere heart without expecting any reply in the return, and this affection will remain intact until the end of life. It seems the love that parents have for their children is as close to unconditional through good times and bad, feel love for them can’t stop, without expecting any reply to them. It’s true eternal love.

Reflection of kindness
Kindness is the one of the characteristic of a good person, even the most important factor to establish a relationship with God or human. This is as an action that starts from our conscience. Act that spreads joy, a joy that has no borders, kind of giving without the expectation of something in return. Usually kindness started with an act which make other people fell helped and fortunate or happy. Moreover, God will give the good person more solution when he or she has a problem because of his or her kindness they have done before. It can start from a little thing to do, such as share our sincere smile to everyone we meet. A sincere smile can make big changing and it spreads joy to people around.
The reflection is a quick and immediate action is done instinctively or automatically, not only just an attribute, but is a state of constant behavior in some people to show their good respect to others around. This reflection like automatically installed in good person conscience and it is constant, for example, a good person who always has a sincere smile, in every moment when he or she starred with other people even do not know before automatically the lips will rise and wide to start the smile, the sincere smile. And the smile only the basic act, after it will continue with a warm greeting moreover give a time to answer a question from foreigner to guide a direction to the destination place. When they see other people with a lot of stuff automatically their good reflection deep from conscience will help to open the door or bring the stuff. All they do to help is really done with sincerity for that reason every little act will always spread the joy, a joy that has no borders.
Kindness is the result of a form of worship that is done in earnest and the results can be seen from these small actions such as: attention, sympathy, humanity, and love. If our relation with God by worship in earnest, it will create kindness to our conscience and it will automatically reflect in our attitude or action, it’s reflected how we treat others, be a helpful person and give our attention with full of sympathy. Our humanity side will full by love which supports us in giving without the expectation of something in return from people, but definitely trust that God will give the reward.
So we can conclude the basis of kindness is the result of a form of worship that reflected good action that is natural because of the encouragement of conscience. The one and important thing to build is our worship to our God, because it will grow our basic of kindness, the natural kindness originally from conscience. From all of that every small action we do will reflection many kinds of kindness, of the others and of course share happiness, joy even good spirit. There are many ways to reflection of kindness, it can start from the little thing such as share a sincere smile until the bigger thing such as being volunteer natural disasters. But the important thing is starting from our worship to our God.

They try their best to bring all the students on the right track by motivation them positively towards study. Good teachers leave good impression over their students.
A good teacher is like a God as God is the builder of whole universe however a teacher is considered to be the builder of a good nation. Teachers are very prestigious people in the society who take responsibility to raise the mind status and living standard of the common people through their magic of teaching. Parents have lots of expectations from the teachers of their kids. The role of teachers varies from classroom to playground and from student to student. A teacher is very important in the life of everyone who is supposed to be performing different tasks in our life. A good teacher is a good person who takes very important responsibility of shaping up the lives of young ones and impressionable children. They get great feeling, pride and true joy in their life by teaching their students on the right path. They never do any type of partiality between good or bad students instead they always try to bring bad one on the right path through their lots of efforts.
A good teacher only want to see their students happy and successful. A good teacher never loses patience and teaches every student accordingly. Forexample, our teachers motivate us to wear clean clothes, eat healthy foods, avoid junk foods, care for parents, behave well with others, come to school at right time in proper uniform, never tell lie to anyone in life, react positively, take care of school property, take care of your books, copies, and other study material, always pray to God for better concentration on study, before coming to the classroom a good teacher ensures his/her goals of education on daily basis.
A good teacher is the one who provides a best model of future generation to his/her nation. Proper education is the only way to remove social issues, corruption, etc from the nation which ultimately lead to the real growth and development of a nation. The Da Vinci Code by Reading and Watching: A Comparative Essay

Reading the original novel which later will be filmed is more attractive and also more interesting than only watching the movie based on it. As we know, on 2006 the world was shocked by a fabulous novel which dared to reveal the true identity of Jesus and Marie Magdalena to Vatican sounded its concern of this movie and urged the whole world to avoid watching this movie. That popular and shocking novel in this decade is deserved to be discussed in this text is titled The Da Vinci Code Authorized by Dan Brown.
By reading it, people are able to get the real and stunning chronology related with theology inside, started from how an old curator named Jacques Sauniere, the Sion – Abbot – Leader, is killed by Silas. He left the greatest treasure on earth which important to be revealed. This disclosure case involves someone who is positioned as a religious symbology professor from Harvard University named Robert Langdon. The story is written in detail and it is able to make the readers are trapped and follow it seriously. But, when the readers - which had been read before – try to watch the movie, they are mostly disappointed with it. The movie shows everything too simple and filled by fast dialog, especially by Langdon. Moreover, Indonesian viewers who don’t understand English at all, are confused by the dialog especially in the most important scenes when Leigh Teabing explains about who is Jesus actually, the subtitle is erased by government cause it contains controversial things related to God and religions.
Based on the novel, which has 200 more pages and complexities inside the readers are able to re-read the page which haven’t been understood yet. So, the readers have more time to fully understand the story from A – Z. How about watching the movie? It serves us many fast conversation, and of course the texts which quickly occurred and slide away. It makes the Indonesian viewers getting sick with several scenes inside.
The atmosphere of complexities are felt enough when we read the novel, until the readers are able to get inside the story and page by pages the readers can feel the high tension until the end of the story. Guess what? the movie director, Ron Howard, soothe the big problems which animate this story, it seem the problems how to reveal who is Jesus, what is Holy Grail, who is Maria Magdalena, and who created Christian are easily solved. Perhaps it’s about how to optimize the normal movie duration in 3 hours only.
According to several points that have been discussed above, about the comparison between watching a movie based on the popular novel on reading its original novel, it would be better if one read the whole pages of that popular and hit novel before watching its movie. Reading before watching it is the strategy that can help the viewer watching it without ignorance.

A little kindness to thousands of great kindness
I. Introductory Paragraph
Every person are same. The thing that make them similar are they have a brain to think and they are also have a heart to feel. Brain and heart has a connection to make an activity, such as laughing, crying, thinking, writing, and many more. It is also make the people to do the good thing, because every person have a natural tendency to do a kindness even if only a trivial thing. It is guided by their brain to think and heart to feel about it.

II. Body Paragraph I
Supporting Fact:
You're going to feel sadness when you heard the little kid whimpering in pain and need a help. This problem no need to look on the gender, color of the skin, background of the education, or anything. It is only need a person who have solidarity with everything in around them, not a person who are apathetic.

Now the people are difficult to find person who have a solidarity in another one, because they too busy with their own activity. Actually this is not a difficult problem, because the solidarity is a humanity activity.and it is come back to the brain and heart. The person can order to both are to do it and that is the simple kindness that the person can do.

III. Body Paragraph II
Supporting example:
When you are on the road, suddenly you see the little kid who fell down and injured with the blood on her leg. He cries and need a help. If the person have a solidarity, sure they had to help him, because they are feeling will order to help him, even though they never knew the child before.
Generally, a people who honest to do a kindness never think about what benefit that they are will get. The people will feel satisfy to save someone’s live. The people must to believe that what they do will soon back to them. For example, when “A” do the kindness to “B”, “A” will get a kindness also, although not come from “B”, but when “A” do the bad thing to “B” , “A” will get a more bad thing, although not come from “B”.
The conclude of the example in the simple way is such as the person who plant a seeds. When a person plant a good seeds they are will get the good tree, but when the person plant a bad seeds they are will also get the bad tree.

IV. Conclusion
Kindness is a natural tendency of every human being, no matter how physical they are, where they come from, what color of their skin, all of them have a kindness in their hearts, although like a small seed. You are wrong if you think that you will get nothing after do a kindness to someone that you do not know, but actually after that you will get a thousands of great kindness, because the people do not know where it come from. A. Different Feeling
The first differences are how to feel that. Both people who enjoy reading a novel and watch a movie have different satisfaction. People can repeat misunderstanding when read a novel till enough clear, but people will be satisfied to watch a movie, because it has a duration which can be ascertained.
Different to perceptive the storyline. People can understand a word by word when they are reading a novel. In contrast, people can understand the gesture, mimic, and voice of the actress or actor when they are watching a movie.
Way to use brain will be different too. People who use left brain will be focused when they are reading a novel and describe it by themselves, but people who use right brain will enjoy watching a movie and imagine it by themselves.
B. Different Passion
The second differences are different passion. Unlike people who enjoy reading a novel, a favorite place of people who enjoy watching a movie will be different. People who enjoy reading a novel will be fine in a quiet place, but people who enjoy watching a movie will be fine in a crowded place.
Both people who enjoy reading a novel and watching a movie have a different ability. People who enjoy reading a novel will have sharp minds, they are being focused to understand the plot well, but people who enjoy watching a movie will be a multitasking person, because they are trying to understand everything at a time. For example, they will try to combine the music/soundtrack of the movie when they still focus on the plot.
Both people who enjoy reading a novel and watching a movie have a different habit and perspective. Most of people who enjoy reading a novel are books collector. They like to collect many types of book, not often they will save money and no need to pay anymore when they need to read that book twice, but people who enjoy watching a movie will get the different experience when watch a movie to another one. Almost of them never think about cost, because experience is a priority.
C. Different rated recitation
A third differences are rated recitation. Both novel and movie, which is adapted in one of it has a difference in one another. Usually, the novel writer or movie creator will add something that little bit different, so the consumer will get a different message, although still in a line story.
Unlike novel that no need much media, but in a movie use much media. For example, soundtrack, lighting, and many more, so the viewer will get the plot as well as possible.
In a novel people will imagine face or the character of the figure by themselves, whereas in a movie people will be helped to understand the face or the character of the figure by the actress/actor.
III. Conclusion
All in all, that are several differences sensations among read a novel and watch a movie that often to feel almost of people. In fact, every person is different, they have different feeling, different passion, and different rated recitation, but the best one is someone who can enjoy with many differences and able to combine it to be something that interested.

There are different ways to get a story from different sources in modern times. Books have been good sources for stories, but movies are getting more popular and have the same story with the books. Why are people still reading books, and others prefer watching the movies? Reading books and watching movies have a lot in common, one of them is different limitations. Forexample imagination, time and plot.
The first limitation is about imagination. By reading the books, the reader has to open his mind for imaginations. Books only show words, and the images of the story are imagined in the brain. On the other hand, movies give a particular picture of the story to the audiences, and the audiences get details through visual and hearing. The audiences can only get what is shown in the movies but can’t think outside the box for more creative thinking. The readers can have different feedbacks to the story, but the audiences can only agree with the movies; therefore, reading books and watching movies make the readers or audiences response differently. For example, in the book Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, Percy is supposed to “look” like a 12 year old who doesn’t know what he is doing and would lose any fight he got into. But in the movie, Percy looks sort of athletic, and is 16 years old. So when you reading a book, you see him as a sort of weakling, but when you see the movie, that whole mental image gets shattered.
The second limitation is about time. Watching movies can save a lot of time, but reading books could take a long time depending on the speed of reading. For those who can’t read fast, they would prefer watching movies. A movie will take about two hours, but reading a book could take more than two weeks for some readers. People think reading books and watching movies are the same, so they will choose to watch the movie for their time’s sake. Watching the movie can give them a better picture about the story because it is visual and is within a shorter period of time; therefore, the audience can remember the story easier. Besides, movies keep on renewing every week, but a new book needs to be written and published which will take a long time. That’s why people who like new and fresh things will prefer watching movies.
The third limitation is about plot. people only make movies around 3-4 hours long because they are afraid that people won’t watch it if it’s too long, which means they have to cut a lot of parts out and then put some more parts in to let it make sense. But with a book, it can be as long as the author wants it to be, as long as it all makes sense. I’ve seen people who read books that are over 600 pages long and not mind a bit, but when a 3 hour movies comes, they just can’t concentrate that long. When movies are made from books the makers have artistic license to change the story to fit their medium, and they do use it quite a lot. Because a movie making is a process. A lot changes from initial idea to what you see on screen.For example a directors, cinematographers and actors might have differing views about how a particular shot is to be shown. What you finally get on screen can sometimes be wildly different than what original story writers imagined.While the quote "a picture is worth a thousand words" is true and it can certainly convey quite a lot. But one can only take in so much at a time.A nod here, a wink there, you might miss some of these the first time you see in movies, but in books the writers take time to show and establish these.

To summarize ,there are three limitation between reading books and watching movies. Those are imagination ,time, and plot. Both movies and books are among the most precious source of information. It has each advantages depends on person.

Differences of Reading Novel and Watching Movie

Reading novel and watching is similar things which are the author wants to tell about story and give message to the reader or audience. Besides, these two things are different in some ways. There are some differences will mention as below:

First of all, the differences are time. Reading novel is not limited by time instead of watching movie. The reader can bring novel everywhere, they can read and stop whenever they want. Then, starting reading continue page where the part is stopped. Besides, watching movie is limited by time. Mostly it need time about two hours until three hours. The audience also need go to cinema for watching. But the advantages are someone can save a lot of time.

Second, the differences are imagination. If reading novel, the reader is free for their his own mind how the character is look like, what the voices sound looks like and what the scene based on words, dialog, and picture for depth story novel, because the scenes in the novel are not all transform clearly in a movie. On the other hand if watching movie, the audience can see directly all scenes happened, story of novel clearly. That’s why the audience doesn’t have to image, because all event, conflict, setting or face of the figure can be seen clearly by visual movie.

Third, the differences are story details. Reading novel, reader can know complete story because novelist never limited by how many pages of novel will be created and how many pages for end to the story, so much the pages will be read by reader, and the novel also explain more details about the feelings of the characters and figures, so the reader can be swept way both of physically and spirit every scene of the novel. On other hand watching movie, movie need to cut away some details because they need to squeeze everything into two hours , and audience can be enjoy the full story.

In conclusion, differences of reading novel and watching movie it could be time, imagination, and story details. Those kinds have differences catch of someone’s reaction, but both of them will make audience or reader novel feel to enjoy the story.
